Subject: EDLIN Not Modifying File
Date: August 2, 1990
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
PROBLEM: We have a customer running ELS I v2.0A with a file called
MUSIC.MNU. When he tries to edit this file with EDLIN,
everything seems to work fine. He can edit and save without
any problems. The problem arises after he has made changes
and saved them. He types the file and the changes are not
there. It only does this on this file name. We have
renamed it and it works fine. We have edited other files
and it works fine. We have deleted it and recreated it and
it still does not recognize the modifications. It does this
on all his workstations and with different versions of DOS.
SOLUTION: EDLIN creates a backup copy anytime you make changes and if
this file is flagged SRO, EDLIN will not update your file.
Instead, it will create a new one containing your changes
called FILENAME.$$$. So you should flag your files SRW
before using EDLIN to modify them.
